Why does my bike smell strongly of petrol?

A strong petrol smell around your bike is never a good sign. While some odour is normal with older carburetted machines, a constant or overwhelming smell usually indicates a problem inside the carbs.

Leaking float valves are one of the most common causes. If the floats stick or the needle tips are worn, fuel overflows inside the bowls and vents into the airbox or onto the ground. Perished O-rings and gaskets can also allow seepage, while over-rich mixtures caused by misadjusted screws or worn jets will leave the exhaust smelling of raw fuel.

Not only does this waste petrol and foul your spark plugs, it also presents a serious fire hazard. Many riders park their bike in a garage attached to the house, meaning those fuel fumes can build up indoors.

At The Carb Shack, we take petrol leaks and odours seriously. Every carb set we service is stripped, ultrasonically cleaned, fitted with new float valves and seals where needed, and adjusted to spec. We also pressure and leak-test all carbs before they leave our workshop so you can ride confidently without worrying about fuel smells or leaks.

If your bike constantly reeks of petrol, don’t ignore it. Book your carbs in for a professional clean and rebuild today. It’s safer, cheaper, and far more effective than temporary DIY fixes.
